By the time we were all tuned and set up in the practice room the sun was pouring in through the tall windows, so much so that we had to open them and draw some of the curtains. The birds were singing and the low cooing of the Rock Doves floated in with the sun.
And what had the Conductor chosen for us this day? Vaughn Williams and Dvorak: both redolent of the countryside. We worked with a will and it turned into one of those magic occasions when everything coalesced: our general mood, our ability which rose to the demands of the music, the sounds from outside and the weather.
At the end we all left, uplifted, hopeful and optimistic.
And how often can that be said of orchestral rehearsals?
Ours anyway! 😀
