A lovely evening yesterday.
Friend is a very good cook and had marinaded thin strips of pork in a sauce he made up with cinnamon, star anise, sweet soy sauce and sherry. Then cooked with onion, green peppers and stir fried cabbage, all served with rice. It was absolutely gorgeous!
Eaten on our knees in front of his new widescreen TV watching Babylon 5: another disc watched and ended at a pivotal moment. Despite the recent frosty nights bats were flying in front of the windows as dusk fell while a magnificent cock pheasant came to the pond to drink.
A 45 min. journey home late at night along empty country lanes: at one point three small foxes crossed the road. At first I thought they were piglets, they looked so small and trotted across in front of me. But as I drew alongside them I saw they were very small fox cubs: they looked far too young to be out alone, but at least they were all together.
More sadly I passed the dead body of a very young badger further along the road: obviously only recently out on his own since he was so small. In fact he was much smaller than our badger cubs who still come with their parents when quite large: perhaps some mishap had befallen his parents and he had had no option but to go it alone.
Spring can be very sad for some youngsters leaving the nest!
