Determined to make the most of life and in need of some blustery sea air to blow away the effects of my friends’ sorrows at the moment, I suggested a day away at the seaside on Sunday. I have always found the sight and sound of waves a great help when the heart is aching.
Sister and brother in law accompanied me and husband, and suggested Bridlington as a destination – being only a two hour drive from us. It is a port on the East Coast: we all travelled together and when they turned up to collect us there was a sign in the car – not quite correct, we are not all pensioners!!
On the way we passed about 15 hares running in various fields: unfortunately we saw none boxing.
I shall let the photos tell the day by themselves, with just a few comments. Apologies for the dark mark on the lens, I thought I had rubbed it off but clearly, to my irritation, I had not!
Suffice it to say that the sky was blue and the air mild for most of the day, clouding over briefly a couple of times.
The chalk cliffs and lighthouse of Flamborough Head:
We walked a couple of miles along the beach to the port.
And sat on the sea wall to eat our fish and chips (which were gorgeous!)
accompanied by feathered friends who flew to catch the pieces we threw up for them
A walk round the town
to find a cafe for a cup, or two, of tea.
And so, to set out for the ocean.
Holes left by lug-worm diggers.
Birds seen: Herring Gull, Black-backed Gull, Mallard, Redshank, Sanderling, Oystercatcher, Turnstones and probably more but I did not have my bins out!
Hello! Lovely pictures of the seaside – so glad you had a good day out.
Yes of course you may link to my post on Wassailing – if you look in th comments I will leave a couple of links to my other oposts about it and other local cider related customs.

Sign me up! I could smell it, feel it and nearly taste it, too. I loved the photo of the multicolored bath houses with the people on the beach. I would have taken that shot, too. Great blog.

Oh, what a beautiful day you had! I like the photo with the bath houses as well. Is it a busy place in the summer? I think I like it more deserted as you found it.
I hope that it blew away some of the pain in your heart.

From Easter onwards it is incredibly busy. There are huge caravan parks, amusement arcades etc. all of which were empty and closed when we went. I would never go there later in the year, there would not be room to move!! But it is close to five major industrial cities and a good place for families with a huge, sandy beach for a relatively cheap and manageable holiday.

I can relate directly to this- when my husband and I received news of my grandfather’s demise recently, we had just touched down in Phuket. There were no flights out until the following morning, and we spent the evening walking along Patong Beach. I was miserable and heartbroken, and yet, the waves seemed so therapeutic, as if they wanted to lift my sorrows away. A beautiful post Sweffling, and thank you so much for sharing.

What a great day. I fully believe that being by the ocean is healing – there is something about breathing in the soft salt air.
And belatedly, happy blogiversary!

Absolutely, it where I go when grieving. The air and also the sound and sight of the waves, rolling in, rolling out, going on for ever.

When I was a little girl (decades and decades ago now) we had a family holiday in Bridlington. Some of those photos looked very familiar and brought back some warming memories. Thanks.

Such a great outing! I think that just looking at the sea makes everyone happier. I’d also love to eat some good fish and chips – it’s not easy to find good ones around here. The shop with the tea must have been another cozy place to stop.
